Stoke City in FA Cup upset

published on February 7, 2012 by Mike Categories: hyperlocal, Internet #Tagged: Blackburn Rovers, Canada, Cyril Cliff, FA Cup, Football, Football Association, Harry Webb, Regina, Saskatchewan, Stoke City, Stoke-on-Trent, The Leader - Post

I found this article about Stoke City in the FA Cup against Blackburn Rovers, Saturday 27 January 1962 reported in The Leader – Post from Regina Saskatchewan Canada on Tuesday 30 January.

It seems that Stoke City were knocked out of the FA cup due to what Mr Cyril Cliff thought was a disputed penalty against them and the disallowing of a legitimate goal for Stoke City.

Cyril Cliff a Stoke City fan of 38 years said

I have instructed my lawyers to issue writs against the referee and the Football Association alleging the match was not properly refereed

We never hear of anyone complaining about the quality of referees or decisions made during matches anymore do we?

Webb, now I’ve heard that name somewhere before…..
