In the background, I support and advise the Friends of Turriff Cemetery Group.
For those that don’t know about the Friends of Turriff Cemetery, they are a group that was set up locally to help tidy and look after the cemetery in Turriff. Aberdeenshire Council still manage and maintain the cemetery, cut the grass and hedges etc. The friends group work alongside the council to provide a bit extra, clearing leaves, litter picking and general tidying. Their aim is to improve the cemetery and make it a pleasant, welcoming place for families visiting graves.
One thing that really shows how this group try and make a difference is messages like
what time is the funeral tomorrow? I’ve got a couple of hours free in the morning I’ll go down and have a tidy up before.
and posts like this from their Facebook page.
The fact that in a few short months, they have a fully formed & constituted group with banking facilities that is recognised by Aberdeenshire Council and thanks to the commitment of the volunteers, is applying for and winning funding applications and grants,
shows the level of commitment from volunteers who believe what they are doing is the right thing to do.
